‘Mombasa’ review: Marioo turns love and pain into a coastal story
By William Muthama, April 30, 2026Tanzania Bongo star Marioo has once again tapped into emotion and storytelling with his release “Mombasa”, a soulful blend of Bongo Flava and Afro-pop that explores love, heartbreak, and the desire for emotional escape.
The track was released on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, as part of his EP #MMMCXII under Bad Nation Records. The song is deeply rooted in Swahili lyrics that feel raw, emotional, and personal.
A Chorus of Escape
Marioo sings about escaping emotional pain, opening with a reflection on how harsh people can be around him: “Hawa watu ni watu wa Mungu kweli, mbona hawana huruma?”
He goes on to describe heartbreak in vivid imagery, saying “Nitakuwa kama samaki anayekufa majini,” before making a clear emotional decision to leave everything behind and seek peace in Mombasa: “Siwezi kuishi bila kupendwa, bora niende Mombasa.”
The chorus is simple yet highly addictive, built on repetition that reinforces the idea of escape and renewal.
“Mombasa, Mombasa”… the hook carries a sense of movement, as if he is physically and emotionally leaving pain behind and stepping into a new beginning.

He adds heartfelt pleas within the song, including “Nikajaribu zari langu” and “Naomba mnipoke,” turning the record into a direct request for acceptance, love, and emotional refuge.
In the second verse, Marioo opens up further, expressing exhaustion from crying “kama mtoto” and revealing his desire to finally find real love and stability, even the possibility of settling down.
One of the striking moments in the track is when Marioo directly calls out Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sheriff, singing “Abdullswamad nateseka mimi”, a line that adds a personal and almost conversational tone to his plea for relief.
It reinforces the feeling that he is not just narrating pain, but actively reaching out for a place of comfort and belonging.
Production
Musically, the production is soft and atmospheric. Gentle guitar riffs, light percussion, and smooth Afro-pop rhythms create a relaxed coastal soundscape.
The beat is not overpowering; instead, it allows Marioo’s vocals to carry the song’s emotion. His delivery is calm but heavy with feeling, balancing heartbreak with quiet hope.

The visualizer adds another layer to the story. It begins with Marioo being chased away by a woman, immediately setting the tone of rejection and emotional conflict.
From there, he is seen hopping onto a pickup truck, leaving the chaos behind as the vehicle moves forward.
