Lilian Ng’ang’a highlights need for proper Kiswahili learning for kids

Former Machakos County First Lady and author Lilian Ng’ang’a has highlighted the importance of children learning proper Kiswahili, saying she would like her son, Utheri, to be exposed to Swahili.
In a statement shared via her Instagram stories, she expressed her appreciation for correct and well-spoken Kiswahili, noting that it is becoming less common in everyday conversations.
“I enjoy hearing people speak Swahili properly. Sanifu,” she wrote.
She raised concerns about where children can access structured learning for the language, pointing out the need for intentional efforts to preserve and teach standard Kiswahili.
“Are there places kids can learn proper Swahili? I want that for Utheri:)” she added.

This comes months after she raised concerns about a decline in basic writing skills among Generation Z.
In a statement shared on her Instagram stories, Lilian said she has noticed that many young people today struggle with simple writing.
Lilian said she would be willing to host a session with Gen Z teachers to better understand the issue. She noted that she would like educators to explain why many young people appear to have difficulties with basic writing skills.
“I would be happy to host a session with Gen Z teachers so they can expound on why this generation struggles with basic writing. Real concern,” she said.
