Kitt Kiarie said the conversation began when her daughter questioned the nature of images used in massage parlour adverts. She explained that the child’s curiosity was based on what she had seen and did not understand.
“The other day we were driving in the car, and Kendi said, ‘Why do they always put a woman with a big a** on these massage parlour adverts?'” Kitt Kiarie said.
She said the question continued as her daughter tried to understand what kind of services were being advertised.
“What kind of massage is going on there?” Kitt Kiarie said her daughter asked.
Kitt Kiarie said she answered without hesitation and clarified what she believed the adverts represented. She explained that her response led to another direct question from her daughter.
“And without thinking, I said it is not a massage parlour; it is a brothel,” Kitt Kiarie said.
She said her daughter then asked her to explain the meaning of the word, making the moment more challenging. Kitt Kiarie explained that she chose honesty because it is a value she follows when raising her children.
“And my child asks me, an eleven-year-old, ‘What is a brothel?'” Kitt Kiarie said.
Kitt Kiarie said she gave a direct explanation, even though it was not an easy conversation to have. She explained that she believes in answering difficult questions truthfully when they arise.
“And because I don’t lie, to them, I say it is a place people go to pay to have s*x,” Kitt Kiarie said.
She added that her daughter reacted with surprise after hearing the explanation. Kitt Kiarie said the moment showed how quickly everyday situations can turn into serious parenting discussions.
