Joshua Baraka: Rise of Ugandan star putting African music on the global map
By William Muthama, March 26, 2026Ugandan singer and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Baraka is quickly establishing himself as one of Africa’s most influential music voices.
Born on December 13, 2000, in Kawempe, Kampala, Baraka’s journey from local church performances to global streaming platforms reflects both talent and tenacity.
Blending R&B, soul, and Afrobeat, his music resonates across generations, telling stories of love, personal growth, and youthful experiences.
Musical journey rooted in family
Baraka’s passion for music began at an early age, nurtured by his Kenyan father, a pastor, and his mother, a choir leader.
Starting as an instrumentalist in local bars and church events, he honed his piano, guitar, and vocal skills before venturing into original material.

His breakthrough came in 2023 with the heartfelt single “Nana,” which quickly gained traction, followed by consistent releases including EPs like Baby Steps (2021), Growing Pains (2024 deluxe edition), Recess (2024), and his debut album Juvie (2025).
Breakthrough hits and regional recognition
The 2025 hit “Wrong Places,” a collaboration with British-Ghanaian producer JAE5, catapulted Baraka into the regional spotlight.
The track topped streaming charts in Uganda and became one of the most-played songs of the year, surpassing even dominant Nigerian releases.
Other standout tracks like “Morocco,” “Dive In,” “Still Young,” and “Girl in Ibiza” have collectively garnered millions of streams, cementing his status as a rising force in African music.

As of March 2026, Baraka has made history as the most-streamed East African artist on Spotify, boasting over 1.7 million monthly listeners, a milestone that highlights his growing global appeal.
Drawing influences from artists like Bob Marley, Chronixx, and Brent Faiyaz, he blends authentic East African sounds with a contemporary, borderless vibe that resonates internationally.
Collaborations with artists such as Bien, Joeboy, Simi, and King Promise have further expanded his reach beyond Uganda.
Beyond the studio, Baraka has taken his music abroad with notable international performances.
He made a major milestone by performing at the Afro Nation festival in Portugal in 2025, becoming one of the first Ugandan artists to grace the main stage of the prestigious Afrobeats event in front of thousands of fans.
He delivered energetic sets, including his hit “Wrong Places,” and has already been announced for the 2026 edition in Portugal, July 3–5.
