Janet Mbugua asks Kenyans to demand accountability as politicians re-emerge with promises

Renowned media personality Janet Mbugua has warned Kenyans to be very careful as politicians across the country emerge from hibernation in a bid to win another term in office.
Mbugua noted that many who were elected went into what she referred to as hibernation and are now emerging with more promises as they eye another term in office.
“Warning: They are emerging from hibernation. Expect promises, not progress,” Mbugua said on her Facebook account on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

She warned Kenyans to expect endless promises, as has been the case in the past, but added that this time, things should be handled differently.
Mbugua’s rallying call
Mbugua noted that none of the current crop should be allowed to get away with their past promises that have largely been unfulfilled, even as they surface with sweet words and another round of the same.
The media personality told Kenyans to be diligent in checking the track record of their leaders and demanding accountability without being swayed by the sweet words, political rhetoric and empty promises that have for a long time characterised elections in the country.
“Verify track records, demand accountability,” she added.

Heightened political activity has been witnessed across the country, with politicians keen on getting a head start, embarking on a charm offensive seeking to woo voters and rally them behind their bid.
Among those seeking a head-start is President William Ruto and his deputy Kithure Kindiki, whose events have increasingly been characterised by reelection politics as they face a resilient united opposition that maintains Ruto should go home.
Celebrities push for accountability
Celebrities, however, are giving them a hard time as the push for accountability gathers momentum with mounting calls to sweep out ineffective leaders who have failed to deliver.
Those who have been quiet all along as Kenyans go through challenges in several key sectors such as education, healthcare, high cost of living and unemployment amid runaway corruption in government are also having it rough in the hands of a well-informed electorate.
Calls to overhaul the entire political establishment in the country have dominated social media discourse with celebrities such as Octopizzo, Juliani, Boniface Mwangi, Lynn Ngugi and Rapcha Sayantist unrelenting in their calls for a paradigm shift.
