I had 12 hours to live: Kamene Goro opens up on being hospitalised and how husband missed critical moment

Kenyan media personality Kamene Goro has opened up about a deeply personal and painful chapter in her life, revealing that during a life-threatening hospital admission, her husband DJ Bonez was not present at her bedside during the most critical moments, even as doctors fought to save her life after she was told she had only 12 hours to live.

“My husband said it was hard for him,” she revealed, speaking about his absence during her emergency hospital stay.

Kamene explained that her condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to a prolonged 36-day hospital admission that included time in ICU, where she was placed under constant monitoring and emergency care. She said the situation escalated to a point where doctors had to intervene urgently to keep her alive.

“I was there for a total of 36 days, on Valentine’s Day I was there, I left just a week before my birthday,” she said.

She revealed that at the most critical stage, she was told she had only hours to live before an emergency procedure was carried out. The severity of her condition, she said, was something even doctors rarely see patients recover from.

“My doctors said that the problems I had, no one makes it out. I was the only one who came out,” she said.

It is during this same period that Kamene says her husband was not physically present in hospital, a moment she now reflects on as part of the emotional weight of that experience. While she acknowledged that he later explained it was too difficult for him to see her in such a fragile state, she says the absence still formed part of her reality during recovery.

“My husband said it was hard for him,” she said.

DJ Bonez, a Kenyan DJ known within entertainment circles and Kamene’s partner in marriage, has largely maintained a private profile despite Kamene’s public life in media and radio. The couple, who previously held a traditional wedding ceremony, have often attracted public attention due to their relationship dynamics, especially given Kamene’s high-profile media career.

Kamene further shared that while she was in ICU, she experienced a painful contrast between life and loss, as many of the patients she was admitted with did not survive.

“Everyone I was with in ICU didn’t make it. I was the only one who came out,” she said.

She recalled that doctors had to carefully move her at night for tests to avoid distress and exposure, as her condition required strict medical attention and constant supervision.

“They used to move me at night so people wouldn’t see me for tests,” she said.

Despite the absence she felt from her husband at that critical time, Kamene said she was supported by unexpected people, including her long-term friend and former colleague, Jalang’o, who she described as visibly emotional when he first saw her in the hospital.

“When I woke up in the morning, the first face I saw was Jalang’o. I looked up and I’ve never seen him so sad,” she said.

She also credited close friends and her mother for standing by her, even as financial and emotional strain hit the family during her admission. According to her, her mother reached out for help in several directions while trying to manage hospital bills.

“My mom called people, people she calls her friends… it wasn’t about money, it was that care you get,” she said.

Looking back, Kamene says the experience changed how she views life, relationships, and emotional presence, adding that she has learned to value peace and happiness above everything else.

“Live a life that you want to live. Do what makes you happy. Drop that trash. Just be happy. Right now, I’m stupid happy,” she said.

She also clarified that her condition was not linked to lifestyle choices, stating that it was a sudden medical emergency involving sepsis and peritonitis, which escalated quickly and nearly cost her life.
