‘Go back to the Bible’ – Dr Ofweneke calls out gospel musicians over trend-driven music
By William Muthama, May 5, 2026Comedian and Media personality Dr Ofweneke has called on gospel musicians to return to biblical foundations, warning that many artistes are drifting away from scripture and relying too much on trends.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, May 5, 2025, directed at gospel ministers, he said the direction of gospel music today risks losing its spiritual depth and impact.
Dr Ofweneke challenged gospel musicians to rethink their approach to music creation, arguing that the Bible should remain the core source of inspiration.
He noted that the gospel ministry has become increasingly influenced by events, trends, and commercial pressure rather than the Word of God.
“Gospel artists/Ministers: God back to the Bible, the gospel ministry is dry because your songs are being inspired by trends and events and not by the word of God,” he urged gospel musicians, stressing the need for a deeper connection to scripture in their work.
Impact over branding
He further warned that focusing on personal branding over ministry impact weakens the purpose of gospel music.
According to him, the strength of gospel music lies in its ability to transform lives, not just build popularity.

“Stop building brands, build impact. You will not touch lives unless you have been touched by God. Stop building brands, build impact! The impact or longevity of a song will tell you where the spirit of the artiste was when he wrote the song!! Thus says the Lord,” he said, adding that true ministry should focus on touching souls rather than chasing fame.
Music and spiritual depth
Dr Ofweneke also emphasised that the longevity and influence of gospel songs are determined by the spiritual state of the artist during creation.
He suggested that meaningful gospel music must be rooted in genuine spiritual conviction rather than external trends.
He added that even a single line rooted in scripture can have a powerful impact on a listener’s life.
