Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has confirmed that wedding preparations are now underway after her son, Don, and his fiancée, Yvonne, successfully held their Ngurario, the traditional Kikuyu marriage ceremony that formally seals a couple’s union ahead of their wedding.

In an X post on Sunday, July 19, 2026, the governor congratulated the couple and welcomed Yvonne into the Waiguru family with a heartfelt message that reflected a mother’s pride and excitement.

Addressing the newlyweds-to-be, Waiguru described the occasion as one she would treasure forever, saying witnessing the couple commit to each other had filled her heart with joy and gratitude.

“Congratulations, our son Don, and our daughter Yvonne, on your Ngurario. Some moments stay with a mother forever, and today is one of them. Seeing you both come together in love and commitment fills our hearts with immense joy and gratitude,” Waiguru wrote.

The county boss went on to pray that the values that brought the couple together would continue to guide them throughout their marriage.

According to Waiguru, love, respect, faith and kindness should remain the foundation of their relationship as they begin a new chapter together.

“May the values that brought you here, love, respect, faith and kindness continue to guide you, and may you always choose each other as you begin this new chapter,” she added.

Waiguru also extended a warm welcome to Yvonne, saying the family was delighted to have her officially join them.

“Yvonne, welcome warmly into our family. We are blessed to have you, and we look forward to sharing this journey with you both,” she wrote.

The governor concluded her message by expressing her love for the couple before revealing that the family was now looking forward to the wedding.

“We love you dearly and look forward to the wedding. Harusi tunayo!” Waiguru wrote.

The colourful ceremony was attended by several prominent political leaders, including Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, Nominated Senator Veronica Maina, Nakuru Woman Representative Liza Chelule; Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi; Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Njeri Maina, Kirinyaga Senator James Murango, among other leaders and close family friends who joined the Waiguru family in celebrating the milestone.

The Ngurario ceremony marks one of the most significant rites in Kikuyu traditional marriage customs, symbolising the formal union of two families and clearing the way for the couple’s church or civil wedding.
