Gikomba granny who cried over torched business gifted Ksh4M land after Babytop’s appeal
By Steve Ireri, July 2, 2026Just days after heartbreaking images of 93-year-old Eunice Njoki Gichungu weeping over the destruction of her Gikomba business touched Kenyans across the country, her life has taken an extraordinary turn after Kameme FM presenter Muthoni Wa Kirumba, popularly known as Babytop, rallied well-wishers to support her.
The elderly trader, who had revealed that she was sleeping in a makeshift structure after the fire reduced her source of livelihood to ashes, was invited to Kameme FM on Thursday, July 2, 2026, where she shared her emotional story with listeners and viewers.
The appeal sparked an overwhelming response from Kenyans, who donated thousands of shillings through a Paybill account opened in her name.
However, the biggest surprise came during the live programme when Kiambu gubernatorial aspirant John Mwaura announced that he would personally donate a parcel of land worth Ksh4 million to the elderly woman.
Speaking after Babytop called her, Mwaura said he had been deeply touched by the granny’s story and wanted to ensure she never had to struggle for shelter again.
“And the granny, I would ask her to remain strong. I want to tell her that I personally will take the initiative. This granny is ours; she is our mother. Because of that, I will donate a parcel of land in Thika Grove. That parcel is worth Ksh4 million,” he announced.

Mwaura went a step further, promising that the transfer process would be handled professionally to ensure the property legally belongs to the elderly woman.
“I will also give her the title deed to confirm I have given away the land. I want you, Babytop, to come with her to our offices. We will have a lawyer present, and the process will be completed so that the title deed is changed to read in her name,” he added.
The announcement left the studio in celebration, with Babytop expressing joy over the life-changing gesture.
“With that, we will now look for money to build a house for her. Wow, that is so great,” the presenter responded.
Thank you message
Following the emotional fundraiser that saw thousands of Kenyans rally behind the granny, Babytop returned to social media to express her heartfelt gratitude to everyone who made the life-changing initiative a success.
“To God be all the glory!” she wrote.
The celebrated presenter went on to thank everyone who stood with the elderly woman through prayers, financial contributions, in-kind donations and by tuning in to what she described as a historic broadcast.
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who stood with our beautiful 93-year-old Cùcù today through prayers, generous financial and in-kind support, and by being part of today’s historic show!” she wrote.
According to Babytop, the outpouring of love from Kenyans had given the elderly trader renewed hope after the painful loss of her business and source of livelihood.
“Your love and compassion have brought hope to our Cùcù. May God richly bless you, reward your kindness and multiply every seed you have sown. Together, we are making a lasting difference,” she added.
Babytop also took time to acknowledge individuals and organisations that played a major role in the fundraiser, extending special appreciation to John Mwaura, Jimmy Kagoni, DAMA Mobile Spares, Caropretty the Fashionista, Kameme FM, and Maina Kihumo for standing with the elderly woman during one of the most difficult moments of her life.
