Director Trevor demands apology after TV hosts mock Muthoni’s 72-hour tree-hug challenge
By Ascah Mwango, December 12, 2025Content creator Director Trevor has demanded a public apology from NTV presenters Natalie Githinji, DJ Twinizzle, and Laura Mbatha, accusing them of demoralising environmental activist Truphena Muthoni during her now-famous 72-hour tree-hugging challenge in Nyeri.
The trio from NTV’s Beatz & Buzz found themselves at the centre of a social media storm after comments they made on air were widely perceived as mocking, dismissive, and downright disrespectful toward the 22-year-old activist’s extraordinary attempt at breaking a world record.

During their live segment, one of the presenters suggested that Muthoni’s effort was nothing more than a clout-chasing stunt.
“By the way kama ni sister yangu ningemwambia hii ni ufala unadu. Just because you want a picture na hio certificate unabreak hio record, zii,” one said – a remark that instantly ignited an online firestorm.
Kenyans across X, Facebook and TikTok accused the presenters of being jealous, uninformed and shamelessly using a national platform to mock a young woman fighting for a cause bigger than herself.
Content creator and director Trevor, who has previously championed youth activism and digital creators, did not mince his words.
Trevor insisted that the presenters issue a formal apology to Muthoni, arguing that their remarks were irresponsible and could discourage other young people from engaging in environmental or mental health awareness initiatives.
“This is unacceptable. Standards matter. Information matters. Someone needs to take responsibility and apologise for misinformation being pushed out here,” he said in a post on Instagram on Thursday, December 11, 2025.

But NTV covered her success – even as their presenters mocked it
Interestingly, while the controversial remarks were made on the entertainment show, NTV News aired a separate, balanced segment praising Muthoni’s achievement and highlighting the environmental message behind her mission.
This contrast only intensified the public’s frustration, with many calling on the station to “fix its internal contradictions.”
Muthoni’s gruelling 72-hour feat
On Thursday, December 11, 2025, at around 12:27 pm, Truphena Muthoni successfully completed her 72-hour tree-hugging marathon outside the Nyeri Governor’s office – a challenge she says represents love, conservation, and mental health awareness.
Her rules were strict: No food, no water, no breaks and continuous physical contact with the tree for three days and nights.

She braved cold nights, heavy rainfall, and physical exhaustion, assisted only by medics, police officers, supporters, and curious onlookers who camped around her as she pushed through.
The attempt surpassed her previous record of 48 continuous hours achieved in February 2025.
Muthoni’s team is now submitting the evidence to Guinness World Records (GWR) for verification. The review process typically takes several weeks.
But regardless of the pending confirmation, her brave marathon has already won the hearts of many Kenyans and attracted a wave of support and generosity.
Muthoni has received several gifts, pledges and national praise following her 72-hour tree-hug challenge.
