‘Crime 101’ movie review: Heist, rivalries and dangerous alliances

Crime 101 movie arrives as a sleek, character-driven heist thriller that balances high-stakes action with emotional depth. Adapted from Don Winslow’s novella, the film follows an elite jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) plotting one final score along Los Angeles’ iconic 101 Freeway.

His carefully orchestrated plan collides with a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry), forcing an uneasy partnership, while a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) closes in, determined to end the thief’s run.

The plot may feel archetypal criminal planning retirement, law enforcement on the chase, civilians caught in the crossfire, but Crime 101 executes it with patient tension and stylish flair.

Los Angeles itself becomes a character, with sun-bleached freeways, shadowed high-rises, and neon-lit nights that immerse viewers in a city of both glamour and menace.

Cinematography is particularly strong, turning car chases into tense, almost poetic sequences, with real stakes and precision editing that avoids over-the-top CGI.

Stellar performances

Chris Hemsworth sheds his superhero persona to portray a disciplined, introspective thief haunted by his past and desperate for an exit.

Mark Ruffalo brings gravitas to his obsessive detective, while Halle Berry shines as the burned-out insurance executive whose path unexpectedly intersects with Hemsworth’s character.

Supporting roles elevate the ensemble: Barry Keoghan adds chaotic energy as a young enforcer, Nick Nolte provides weight as a fading crime boss, and Monica Barbaro offers a humanising perspective as a civilian drawn into the chaos.

Climactic tension

At 141 minutes, the film favours character, dialogue, and atmosphere over nonstop action. This deliberate pacing allows tension to build naturally toward a climactic heist where all threads intersect cleverly.

While the movie borrows some stylistic cues from classic heist thrillers, freeway motifs, and cat-and-mouse dynamics, these are minor issues in a story that prioritises craft, suspense, and strong performances

Crime 101 offers an adult-oriented heist story that thrills while respecting its audience. With rivalries, schemes, and dangerous alliances, the movie proves that suspense and character can still rule the screen.
