Cop Shakur explains why he will contest for MP seat in Nairobi

Former prison warden Jackson Kuria Kihara, popularly known as Cop Shakur, has announced his political debut in Nairobi, eyeing a seat in the next parliament.

In a statement on his social media accounts on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, the activist revealed that he will be vying for Member of Parliament in the Westlands constituency.

He noted that, having witnessed the cycle of corrupt leaders being replaced with new ones after every other election with no change, he has made the decision to step forward and drive change.

“We have been in the streets, fighting and speaking out against bad leadership. Time and again, we have seen citizens chase away corrupt leaders, thieves, and even those accused of serious wrongdoing from political seats, only for them to be replaced by others who turn out to be no different,” he stated.

Why go for the seat

He said that this trend has largely continued due to young people failing to step forward to take up leadership roles in the country.

“One reason this cycle continues is that many young people hesitate to step forward and take up leadership themselves. Today, I am announcing that I am going into leadership. And to every young person who has been told, “You are a leader of tomorrow,” I say this: Leadership is not only for tomorrow, it is also for today,” Shakur said.

The activist added that he is open to working with honest leaders of integrity who believe in service to the people and urged the youth to aggressively pursue their political ambitions without being deterred by the common phrase “leaders of tomorrow”.

“Do not let anyone use those words to hold you back. Let us step forward and compete for these seats. I am open to working with clean, honest, and committed people in the political arena who believe in service to the people,” the activist asserted.

Shakur the Cop calls for ballot revolution

Hailing his candidature as a bold step to reverse the trend, Shakur called for a ballot revolution in Westlands, emphasising his commitment.

He said that the decision was arrived at after intense consultations and hailed his bid as a bold step to reverse the trend while calling for a ballot revolution in Westlands.

“After many considerations and consultations, I have decided that I want to represent the people of Kitisuru, Parklands, Karura, Kangemi, and Mountain View. Let’s go, Westlands. It’s time for a ballot revolution,” he concluded.
