Vindee arrested as thousands take to the streets to honour Gen Z protest victims
By Steve Ireri, June 25, 2026Kenyan streamer Vindee was arrested in Nairobi’s Central Business District on Thursday, June 25, after joining thousands of Kenyans who had taken to the streets to commemorate victims of the 2024 Gen Z protests.
The arrest, which was captured during a livestream, unfolded as demonstrations intensified across parts of the city amid heightened security operations and a heavy police presence.
According to footage circulating online, Vindee was moving through the CBD alongside members of his team, including his main videographer and several fans who had been accompanying him throughout the day.
However, events took a dramatic turn when a plain-clothed officer suddenly approached the content creator and took him into custody.
The unexpected arrest caught both his team and his supporters by surprise.
As officers moved in on the streamer, confusion quickly erupted among those around him.

His videographer appeared visibly shaken by the incident and struggled to keep up with the unfolding situation as the livestream continued broadcasting the dramatic moments.
The tense scenes triggered strong reactions from viewers watching the broadcast in real time.
Several fans could be heard questioning the officer’s actions and demanding to know why the popular streamer was being detained.
The arrest occurred as protests in the CBD continued to gain momentum.
Videos from the scene showed large crowds moving through various streets while chanting slogans and commemorating those who lost their lives during last year’s demonstrations.
At the same time, police officers were seen deploying tear gas in an effort to disperse sections of the crowd.
Footage from the livestream also captured officers lobbing tear gas canisters toward protesters as tensions escalated in parts of the city centre.
The demonstrations formed part of nationwide events organised to mark the anniversary of the June 2024 anti-government protests, which became one of the most significant youth-led movements in Kenya’s recent history.
Travel frustrations
Speaking in a TikTok video on Thursday, June 25, 2026, the frustrated content creator revealed that she was stuck on Kiambu Road, where a large number of police officers had been deployed in anticipation of the nationwide protests.
According to Mary, she was on her way to catch a flight at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) when she encountered the unexpected security presence.
In the video, the TikToker said she and her companions were forced to reconsider their travel plans after coming across numerous police officers stationed along the route.
“Guys, let me tell you something. So many officers have been dropped here on Kiambu Road. And I have a flight now. I don’t even know how I am going to access the JKIA airport,” she said.
Mary explained that while she was aware that demonstrations had been planned, she had not anticipated the scale of the security deployment she encountered early in the morning.
The TikToker noted that the officers appeared to have been deployed as early as 5 a.m. as authorities prepared for the anticipated protests.
“We knew there were protests, but we did not expect police officers to block roads and be all over. The officers were dropped here at 5 a.m. because of the anticipated protests,” she said.
Faced with uncertainty over which roads remained accessible, Mary turned to her followers for advice on the best route to use in order to reach the airport.
She revealed that some people had already suggested alternative routes, including using the Northern Bypass and passing through Kamakis in an effort to avoid heavily guarded areas.
“Now, please, guys, tell me, how do we go? Which is the easiest route to use? I see someone told me to go back and use Northern Bypass and Kamakis,” she added.
