VDJ Jones recalls cautioning against nganya stunts 2 days before Komarock’s Detat killed 5
By Steve Ireri, June 7, 2026Radio and entertainment personality VDJ Jones has revisited a past warning he made about dangerous nganya stunts, saying he had foreseen a possible tragedy just days before the Komarock matatu crash that claimed at least five lives.
In a Facebook message on Sunday, June 7, 2026, Jones said he had previously cautioned against reckless driving styles popularly known as “Manyoka,” urging operators to prioritise safety over showmanship.
He noted that his earlier comment on a viral matatu video had expressed concern that the increasingly risky stunts being performed on the roads could eventually lead to loss of life.
“I made this comment some days earlier…2 days later, disaster happened. I saw this coming,” VDJ Jones wrote.
Jones had commented on a social media video showing a red matatu performing dangerous stunts while passengers dangled from doors and windows, warning at the time that such behaviour could end in tragedy.
“The hype is good, but this will turn fatal very soon. Please love your families, you all,” he had written in the earlier post.

Following the Komarock crash, the DJ said the incident had left him deeply disturbed, noting that his fears had unfortunately become reality.
VDJ Jones also used the moment to appeal to matatu operators to adopt more responsible driving habits, saying that while the nganya culture is widely admired, it must be preserved with safety in mind.
“Say no to reckless driving and enjoy responsibly… too many tears for the families of victims,” he wrote.
He said the industry has become a celebrated part of urban transport due to its creativity, branding, lighting systems and entertainment value, but warned that reckless stunts risk destroying what has been built over the years.
“Hakuna industry kubwa most loved kama ya nganya, but we have to do it responsibly,” he added.

Deadly crash
Jone’s remarks come in the wake of a horrific accident involving the popular customised matatu Detat, which rolled over along Enterprise Road near the Dar es Salaam Roundabout in Nairobi’s Industrial Area on Wednesday night.
The 33-seater matatu, which operates on the CBD-Komarock Route 19C under Risen Sacco, was involved in the crash at around 8:00 pm.
Authorities have confirmed at least five fatalities, while more than a dozen passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to various hospitals for treatment.
Among those who died were transport crew members and passengers, including a Huduma Centre employee who was heading home from work when the accident occurred.
The tragedy attracted widespread attention after videos recorded moments before the accident surfaced online.
The footage showed a lively atmosphere inside the vehicle, with passengers cheering, waving and enjoying the ride as conductors hung from the doorway while the matatu moved along the road.
