The music world is mourning the death of legendary Welsh rock singer Bonnie Tyler, the iconic voice behind the timeless ballad ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’.

The singer passed away at 75 on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that has kept generations singing along.

Famous for her incredibly powerful, raspy vocals, Tyler was a household name worldwide, and her hits remain a permanent fixture on radio stations.

Her family and management team confirmed the sad news on Thursday, explaining that she passed away while receiving treatment in Portugal, where she owned a home.

In a statement posted online, they shared, “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.”

Tyler had previously undergone emergency intestinal surgery in May, fighting through a medically induced coma before showing signs of a slow recovery.

A raspy voice that conquered the world

Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler started out singing in local Welsh clubs before catching her big break in the 1970s.

Interestingly, her famous vocal texture was the result of a 1977 throat surgery to remove vocal nodules. Instead of ruining her career, the raspy edge became her ultimate superpower.

Her career skyrocketed in 1983 with ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. The track topped global charts and sold millions of copies. She followed up that success with another massive anthem, ‘Holding Out for a Hero’.

Decades later, her songs still hold massive value; for instance, Spotify paid out over USD1.4 million in 2025 alone for streams of her extensive music catalogue.

Her immense talent earned her three Grammy nominations and an MBE in 2023.

Keeping the fire burning in Kenya

Tyler’s music holds a unique space. For decades, her power ballads have been the perfect soundtrack for relaxed Sunday afternoon radio shows and long matatu commutes.

Whether it is ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ or ‘It’s a Heartache’, her music remains the ultimate choice for karaoke nights.

Her passing marks the end of a journey for a working-class girl who became a global icon. Her family is expected to announce funeral and memorial arrangements in the coming days.
