‘Rest well superstar’: Shekina Karen releases emotional song in honour of Stoopid Boy

Kenyan rapper and singer Shekina Karen has released an emotional track in honour of late Gotta City artiste Stoopid Boy, turning her grief over the loss of her fellow musician into a poignant musical tribute to the fallen star.
The song captures the pain of losing Stoopid Boy while reflecting on the bond the two artistes shared, with Shekina revealing that they had previously written verses together before his death.
In one of the song’s verses, Shekina reflects on the painful reality of having to write a tribute for someone with whom she once shared creative moments.
“We wrote verses together. And today I am writing a tribute with a heavy heart. RIP Edgar. You will forever be a star. This is the way for us all. From the place we came, all of us shall eventually return there. RIP Edgar, RIP superstar,” one of the song’s verses says.
The tribute takes on an even more emotional tone through its music video, which combines striking imagery with footage that pays homage to the late artiste and the environment closely associated with his life and music.
One of the most striking scenes shows Shekina holding lit candles as she delivers her rap, while people appear behind her in a slow, carefully choreographed sequence, nodding their heads and holding candles.
The candle-lit scene creates a sombre atmosphere around the tribute, echoing the growing wave of remembrance that has followed Stoopid Boy’s death.
Other sections of the video show Shekina standing in what appears to be a vast dumpsite in Gotta City, the informal settlement where Stoopid Boy lived and which remained closely associated with his identity as an artiste.
Shekina appears with red hair in the scene as she continues delivering her verses, with the harsh surroundings providing a striking backdrop to the song’s message about life, death and the struggles faced by the late musician.
The music video also incorporates black-and-white footage of Stoopid Boy, allowing moments from his past to appear alongside Shekina’s tribute and further reinforcing the sense of remembrance running throughout the song.
Appeal over Stoopid’s send-off
Shekina has also used the release of the song to reflect on the struggles that surrounded Stoopid Boy’s life, particularly his battle with depression.
While sharing a teaser of the music video, she described Stoopid Boy as a smart young man despite the name he had adopted as an artiste, while calling for greater attention to depression as a serious disease.
“Stoopid was not just a name; the boy was smart. Depression is a disease like any other; let us all stand and fight this deadly disease,” she wrote.
Her message went beyond the tribute itself, with Shekina also using the opportunity to rally support for efforts to give Stoopid Boy a befitting send-off.
She urged members of the public and fellow artistes to join a fundraising drive scheduled to take place in Gotta City on Sunday, September 6, 2026, saying the initiative would help raise money towards the late singer’s send-off.
“Kindly join us for a harambee tomorrow, Sunday, in Gotta City to raise money for Stoopid’s send-off,” she wrote.
Stoopid Boy, whose real name was Edgar, died at his home in Gotta City on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
He had risen to prominence through his memorable contribution to the hit song G Bag Na Jug, becoming one of the recognisable figures of Kenya’s Arbantone scene.
His death came only months after the loss of his elder brother Ian, adding another painful dimension to the grief surrounding his family.
