Radio presenter Diblo Kaberia laid to rest in emotional Meru burial
By Steve Ireri, June 6, 2026Veteran radio presenter and celebrated football commentator Paul Kimani Kaberia, popularly known as Diblo Kaberia or El Mago, was laid to rest on Saturday, June 6, 2026, in an emotional ceremony at Njia Primary School in Kangeta, Igembe Central, Meru County.
Family members, friends, colleagues and football fans gathered to bid farewell to the renowned broadcaster whose distinctive football commentary made him one of the most recognisable voices on Kenyan radio.
The burial attracted several prominent sports journalists and broadcasters, among them Stephen Mukangai, Geoffrey Mwamburi, Kaka Zema, Hassan Mwana Wa Ali, and Fred Arocho, who joined mourners in paying their final respects.
Fred Arocho’s emotional revelation
One of the most emotional moments during the burial came when sports commentator Fred Arocho disclosed details surrounding Diblo’s final days.
Arocho revealed that the late commentator had urgently needed Ksh125,000 for a medical procedure but was unable to secure the assistance required at the time.
The revelation left many mourners reflecting on the challenges Diblo faced during his illness and sparked conversations about the importance of supporting people when they are alive and in need.

Arocho further expressed shock that while Diblo struggled to raise the amount needed for treatment, more than Ksh1 million was eventually contributed towards his funeral arrangements after his death.
“The government should please follow up on its workers. It is not possible that now that he is dead, we have been able to raise more than Ksh1 million, yet when he was alive and desperately needed Ksh125,000 for treatment, we could not raise it. I feel very sad,” he said.
Final journey of a football commentary icon
For years, he entertained listeners with his energetic and captivating football commentary, building a loyal following among sports fans across the country.
Colleagues who attended the burial described him as a talented broadcaster whose contribution to sports journalism left a lasting mark on the industry.
Many speakers praised his passion for football, his dedication to radio and his ability to connect with audiences through his voice.
Battle with illness
Diblo passed away on the morning of May 24, 2026, while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital.
The veteran broadcaster had reportedly been battling an illness for several months, a condition that significantly affected his health and required continuous medical attention.
According to those close to him, he urgently required surgery costing Ksh125,000, but the funds could not be raised in time as his condition deteriorated.
He eventually passed away at the age of 54 while under medical care.
