Obinna warns gamblers after losing Ksh2M bet following Spain’s win over Argentina
By Valerian Khakayi, July 20, 2026Media personality Steve Thompson Maghana, popularly known as Oga Obinna, has urged Kenyans to gamble responsibly after losing a KSh2 million bet when Spain defeated Argentina in the FIFA World Cup final.
Speaking on Monday, July 20, 2026, after the high-profile wager, Obinna said the loss taught him a valuable lesson and cautioned bettors against risking money meant for essential expenses such as rent, school fees or hospital bills.
Addressing gamblers, Obinna encouraged them to treat betting as entertainment rather than a source of income.
“I was taught a lesson by Argentina; that was a very bad game. I do not know how Argentina have been playing these other games,” Obinna said.
“I hope you have learnt a lesson, you who are gamblers. Kama wewe ni mtu wa kuwekelea, I hope you learnt something; usikuwe unawekelea na hiyo pesa yako ya kukula, school fees ama nini. You need to be gambling responsibly.”
The media personality noted that while he was able to absorb the KSh2 million loss, the outcome could have been devastating had he wagered money set aside for other financial obligations
“If I had done that with the money nilikuwa na ngoja kufanya nayo every other thing, sasa hivi ningekuwa na pressure mbaya, ningekuwa hospitalini, and you know some of you do that, and I am sure yesterday there was a person who did that somewhere; alienda akawekelea pesa ya school fees, rent, or hospitali,” he added.
Obinna further urged Kenyans to always bet within their means and avoid staking money they cannot afford to lose.
“I do hope you have learned that you are supposed to bet responsibly,” he urged.
Obinna and Bolo’s Ksh 2M bet
His remarks come a day after losing a Ksh2 million bet to fashion designer Austin Bolo of Bolo Bespoke, who had predicted Spain would beat Argentina in the FIFA World Cup final.
Spain’s victory saw Bolo walk away with the Ksh2 million after the two agreed on the high-stakes wager.
The friendly rivalry began when Obinna publicly challenged anyone willing to stake Ksh500,000 on the World Cup final, expressing confidence that Argentina would emerge victorious. Bolo accepted the challenge and raised the stakes to Ksh1 million before Obinna agreed to double the bet to Ksh2 million.
Following his win, Bolo celebrated by spending Ksh810,000 buying drinks for revellers at Nairobi’s popular Lounge before later announcing that he would use the remaining Ksh1.2 million to support less fortunate people through his charitable project.
