Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Customer Engagement and Citizen Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, gifted Ida Odinga two goats and 80 tree seedlings as she celebrated her 76th birthday.

Mosiria said the gifts were presented as a gesture of respect and appreciation during the special occasion. He explained that the items also carried different meanings linked to Mama Ida, her family and the late Raila Odinga.

“Today, I joined H.E. Ambassador Canon Mama Betty Ida Odinga, EGH, in celebrating her 76th birthday, a special occasion honouring a remarkable woman whose life has been dedicated to family, service, and the betterment of society,” Mosiria said on Monday, August 24, 2026.

Mosiria explained that one of the two goats was dedicated to Mama Ida as a symbol of honour. The second goat, he said, was presented in honour of the late Baba Raila Odinga through his son, Junior Raila Odinga. He said the second goat was given in recognition of Baba since he is no longer with the family.

“As a gesture of respect and appreciation, I gifted Mama Ida two goats as a symbol of honour. One goat was dedicated to Mama Ida, while the second was presented in honour of the late Baba Raila Odinga, through his son, Junior Raila Odinga, since Baba is no longer with us,” Mosiria said.

The meaning behind the 80 seedlings

Mosiria also presented 80 tree seedlings in recognition of Ida’s commitment to environmental conservation. He noted that Ida serves as an Environment Ambassador to UNEP, making the seedlings part of the birthday tribute. The number of seedlings was also linked to her age and members of her family.

“I also presented 80 tree seedlings in recognition of Mama Ida’s commitment to environmental conservation as an Environment Ambassador to UNEP,” Mosiria said.

Mosiria explained that 76 of the seedlings represented each year of Ida’s life. He said additional seedlings were dedicated to Junior Raila Odinga, Winnie Odinga, Rosemary Odinga and the late Fidel Odinga. He said the 80 seedlings were meant to carry a message about life, family and legacy.

“Seventy-six seedlings represent each year of her life, while additional seedlings were dedicated to Junior Raila Odinga, Winnie Odinga, Rosemary Odinga, and the late Fidel Odinga,” Mosiria said.

He further explained that the seedlings also served as a tribute connected to the late Raila Odinga. Mosiria said the number was meant to remember the age at which Baba passed away while also highlighting the importance of protecting the environment for future generations.
