Mosiria appeals to Kenyans to vet agencies before seeking jobs abroad

Nairobi County’s Chief Officer for Customer Engagement and Citizen Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has urged Kenyans seeking employment opportunities abroad to be careful before paying money to recruitment agencies.

His appeal comes after meeting a woman who was affected by a recruitment arrangement involving plans to secure a job overseas for her brother. Mosiria said many people are losing money to individuals posing as genuine recruitment agents.

The woman visited Mosiria at his office while experiencing severe pain and distress. According to Mosiria, she has been battling a stomach-related illness for several years. He explained that financial difficulties prevented her from accessing proper medical treatment.

Mosiria said the woman later travelled to Qatar to work as a house manager. He explained that her goal was to earn money and improve her situation while seeking a way to manage her medical condition. During her time abroad, she remained in contact with her family back home.

“While working there, her brother informed her that if he got an opportunity to work abroad, he would gladly support her medical expenses and help improve her situation,” Mosiria explained on Monday, June 22, 2026.

The woman then contacted an agent who had earlier helped her travel to Qatar. According to Mosiria, the agent informed her that a job opportunity could be arranged for the woman’s brother in Kuwait. However, the process required a payment.

Warning against recruitment fraud

Following the case, Mosiria urged Kenyans to take extra precautions before committing money to any agency promising jobs abroad. He said job seekers should verify all details and ensure the companies they deal with are properly registered and licensed.

“My appeal to everyone seeking opportunities abroad is this: before paying anyone your hard-earned money, conduct thorough due diligence,” Mosiria said.

“Verify the agency, confirm their licenses, and seek independent reviews,” he added.

Mosiria expressed concern over the increasing number of fraud cases linked to overseas job recruitment. He noted that many people are being targeted by individuals who take advantage of their desire to secure better opportunities outside the country.

“Sadly, cases of fraud and fake recruitment agents are becoming far too common, and many innocent people are losing their life savings in the process,” Mosiria said.

He encouraged Kenyans to remain vigilant and thoroughly investigate any recruitment agency before making financial commitments.
