Mercy Masika speaks on importance of uncomfortable conversations in relationships

Kenyan gospel singer Mercy Masika has urged couples and people in relationships to address difficult issues instead of allowing disagreements to grow into resentment and distance.

In a statement shared on her Instagram page on Thursday, September 17, Masika reflected on the importance of having uncomfortable conversations, saying avoiding them can create deeper problems in relationships.

She noted that disagreements are not necessarily what cause relationships and marriages to fall apart, but what happens when people stop addressing them openly.

Masika’s message focused on the need for honesty when dealing with problems between couples.

According to the singer, unresolved disagreements can slowly affect how people relate to each other, especially when they begin keeping things to themselves instead of talking about what is bothering them.

She explained that silence can lead to resentment, emotional distance, and assumptions, with people eventually keeping track of past disagreements without addressing them.

“If you think having uncomfortable conversations is hard, wait until you see the results of not having them,” Masika said. The singer suggested that having a difficult conversation early can prevent problems from growing into bigger issues that may be harder to deal with later.

‘Disagreement goes underground’

Masika also pointed out that couples can disagree without necessarily damaging their relationship, as long as they are willing to communicate and work through their differences. She said problems can become more serious when disagreements are left unspoken and slowly affect the relationship.

“Many marriages and relationships rarely break because people disagree; they break because the disagreement goes underground and turns into resentment, distance, guessing, and quiet scorekeeping,” she wrote.

Her message highlights the importance of allowing both partners to express their concerns rather than expecting the other person to guess what is wrong.

Speak the truth in love

Masika encouraged couples to approach difficult conversations with honesty while being mindful of how they speak to each other. She also brought prayer into the conversation, urging people to seek wisdom before addressing sensitive matters in their relationships.

“Speak the truth out, but in love. Pray for wisdom and prepare. And handle that hard conversation,” she said.

The singer’s message comes as a reminder that communication is part of maintaining a relationship, particularly when couples face disagreements. Rather than allowing unresolved issues to build over time, Masika encouraged people to confront them with honesty, love, and wisdom.
