Lynn Ngugi questions President Ruto’s leadership, says Kenyans have a right to demand accountability

Media personality Lynn Ngugi has criticised President William Ruto’s leadership, arguing that Kenyans have every right to question the government’s handling of the economy and the rising cost of living.
In a post shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Lynn responded to remarks made by the President earlier, saying leaders should take responsibility for the country’s challenges instead of blaming critics and the opposition.
Accountability is not being anti-development
According to Lynn, disagreeing with the government should not be interpreted as opposing development. She maintained that holding leaders accountable is part of a healthy democracy.
“Mr President, you don’t get to talk about threats when your administration has spent the last few years becoming the biggest threat to ordinary Kenyans. And this habit of calling everyone who disagrees with you ‘anti-development’ has to stop. Kenyans have every right to question you. That’s not being against progress. That’s holding the people in power accountable,” she wrote.

She went on to question why Kenyans should continue supporting the government while many are struggling with the high cost of living.
‘Support is earned’
Lynn argued that public support cannot be demanded but must be earned through leadership and delivery. “You keep asking Kenyans to rally behind your government. For what exactly? Support is earned, Mr President. It isn’t demanded,” she said.
She also urged the Head of State to accept responsibility for the country’s economic situation, saying the opposition should not be blamed for challenges affecting ordinary citizens.
“The opposition is not responsible for the state of our economy. You are. You’ve been in charge. If businesses are struggling, if taxes have become unbearable, if millions of Kenyans are working harder than ever but getting nowhere, that’s your record, not theirs,” Lynn added.

President calls for support
Lynn’s remarks came after President Ruto, in a statement shared on his X account on Sunday, July 26, described the opposition as a threat to the country’s future and economy.
The President urged Kenyans to rally behind his administration, saying it is focused on driving economic growth and expanding opportunities. He also stated that those who do not support progress and development should not stand in the way of the country’s transformation.
Lynn’s response has since sparked conversation online, with Kenyans sharing differing opinions on her remarks. While some agreed with her call for accountability, others defended the government’s position, highlighting the ongoing debate over the country’s economic direction and leadership.
