Lucy Natasha’s mother, Pastor Wanjiru opens up on life in Mathare

Pastor Esther Wanjiru Mugambi, mother to Reverend Lucy Natasha, has shared a heartfelt reflection on her early life in Mathare, accompanied by a throwback photo showing her children, including a young Natasha and her sibling.
The photo, taken during a difficult period of her life, shows Pastor Wanjiru holding her secondborn, Shiphrah, while her firstborn, Natasha, stands beside her.
She used the photo to reflect on her journey marked by struggle, uncertainty, and unwavering faith.
Looking back, she recalled the hardships they went through as a family, saying there were times when life was defined by tears, prayers, and the determination to keep moving forward despite limited resources.

“This photo was taken in Mathare. The little girl standing beside me is my firstborn, Natasha. The baby in my arms is my secondborn, Shiphrah,” Wanjiru wrote.
“Looking at this picture, I remember the struggles, the tears, the uncertainty, and the prayers. We did not come from wealth or privilege. There were days when all we had was faith in God and the determination to keep moving forward.”
Current life
Today, she noted, many people only see the blessings and influence her family now carries, without understanding the humble beginnings in Mathare that shaped their journey.
She emphasised that one’s background does not determine their future, encouraging people not to be limited by where they start in life.
“Today, when people see the blessings, the influence, the doors God has opened, and the lives being touched, they may not know where the journey began,” she added.
“This is your reminder that your current address is not your final destination. Your background does not have the power to cancel your destiny.”

Pastor Wanjiru added that her story is a testament to resilience and faith, stating that God can elevate someone from difficult beginnings to become a voice of influence.
“God can take a child from the slums and make them a voice to nations,” Wanjiri stated.
“Never be ashamed of where you started. Be grateful that God did not leave you there. Where you came from does not determine where you will go.”
