Liz Jackson explains how supporting World Cup team left her in a tough spot

Media personality Liz Jackson has opened up about the difficult position she found herself in during a recent World Cup match involving Lionel Messi and Cape Verde.
In an Instagram post shared on Saturday, July 4, 2026, Liz said she wanted Messi to win but also felt strongly about supporting an African team.
The content creator explained that she has long been a fan of Messi and was happy to see him still performing well. However, she also said Cape Verde had her support because she always backs African teams in international competitions.
Supporting Africa first
Liz said the match became difficult to follow because both sides meant something to her. While Messi was the player she wanted to see succeed, Cape Verde was an African nation she had hoped would do well in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
“World Cup can really put you in a tight spot. I’m a Messi fan, of course I wanted him to win, but then again I support every African team first,” she wrote.
She said Cape Verde has been on her travel wish list for some time, making the team’s participation more meaningful to her. “I was really rooting for them,” she added.
Choosing to wait for the result
Rather than watching the match while feeling divided, Liz said she decided to sleep and wait to find out the final result later.
Her reaction showed the mixed emotions many football fans experience when their favourite player faces a team they also support. “So I just slept waiting to see who won,” she said.
After learning the result, Liz said she was pleased that Messi had won but still felt sad for Cape Verde. “I’m happy Messi still got it, but I’m heartbroken for Cape Verde,” she wrote.
