‘If you assume your spouse is unfaithful, they will confirm it’ – Fao Shyshy explains

In an Instagram Stories post shared on Monday, September 28, 2026, Fao described people as mirrors, arguing that the way individuals view others can shape how they experience their relationships.

Fao said people can sometimes place assumptions on those around them and then interpret their actions through those beliefs. “People are mirrors. Every person in your life, without exception, is reflecting your own beliefs, assumptions, and expectations to you,” she said.
She explained that people may unconsciously assign roles to those around them based on what they already believe about them.
According to Fao, someone who expects dishonesty from a person may interpret their actions as proof of that belief, while someone who fears betrayal may similarly view their friendships through that fear.
“If you believe that someone is dishonest, they will prove you right. If you assume your spouse is unfaithful, they will confirm that assumption. If you are afraid that a friend will betray you, they will reflect that fear to you,” she wrote.
‘Expect the best from a person’
Fao Shyshy further encouraged people to examine the expectations they carry into their relationships instead of constantly worrying about what others are doing. She argued that people’s thoughts and beliefs can influence how they interpret situations around them and the behaviour of those they interact with.
The content creator also touched on success, saying people should not view another person’s achievements as a threat to their own progress.
“When you understand that there is infinite abundance, infinite success and infinite opportunities, you stop fighting. You stop worrying about what others are doing, because you know that their success has nothing to do with yours,” she said.
Fao added that people should not live with the fear that someone else could take away what is meant for them. “No one can take what is meant for you. No one,” she added.
Fao urges people to let go of fear
Towards the end of her message, Fao encouraged her followers to let go of old assumptions and fears, particularly when dealing with people close to them. She suggested that deliberately expecting better from someone could change the way the relationship develops.
“If you drop the old assumptions, let go of the fear, and deliberately expect the best from a person, they will reflect that change to you,” she wrote.
Her message centred on self-reflection, trust and the importance of examining personal expectations when navigating relationships, friendships and other connections.
