Geoffrey Mosiria vows to intervene after Majembe pulls out of Vurugu 2 boxing
By Steve Ireri, June 11, 2026Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement Geoffrey Mosiria has pledged to step in personally following the sudden announcement by defending boxing champion Protifas Odipo, popularly known as Majembe, that he has pulled out of the upcoming Vurugu Boxing 2 event.
Speaking in a TikTok video on Thursday, June 11, 2026, Mosiria expressed disappointment regarding the champion’s decision to withdraw and confirmed plans to hold private discussions to understand the root cause of the situation.
He emphasised his intention to resolve the ongoing disputes behind closed doors rather than allowing them to play out in public forums.
“It is so sad to see and know that this boxer will not be in Vurugu 2. We will talk about those things personally with him. And Majembe is the champion,” he said.
While acknowledging that the defending champion might remain silent publicly on the matter, the Nairobi County official remained firm on his commitment to pursue a face-to-face meeting to address the underlying issues directly.
Reflecting on the history of the fighters, the official revealed that he had personally funded the training for Mbavu the Destroyer. He claimed that if the challenger had not prematurely stopped his boxing training sessions, the outcome of the first edition would have been entirely different, with the challenger securing the victory.
“And you know, if Mbavu Destroyer hadn’t quit the boxing training I had paid for him, I am sure he would have beaten you in Vurugu 1. But I am happy,” he added.

Consequently, the county leader strongly advocated for an independent rematch between the two rivals. He insisted that any future bout must be entirely free and fair.
Crucially, he specified that the event must not take place at the home turf of the defending champion, demanding a completely neutral venue to ensure an unbiased competition.
“But I still insist that a rematch be done between Mbavu and Majembe, which is free and fair, and which will not be held at home. I know Majembe will not comment on that, but we will meet personally and talk about it. But it is so sad that Majembe will not participate and has pulled out of Vurugu Boxing 2,” he said.
Addressing widespread public speculation that he is not close with the defending champion, the Mosiria firmly rejected those claims and clarified that their relationship is built on a long-standing history of mutual support.
He recalled their very first meeting in Nairobi town, where the boxer was running alongside an individual named Alfayo.
“And you know, most people tend to think Majembe and I are not close, or that we are not close, no. I remember the first time I met Majembe, he was running in town with Alfayo, and I gave him Ksh3,000 just to support him. He is a passionate boxer,” he added.
Mosiria then disclosed that Majembe recently acknowledged how much that foundational financial support meant to his career.
Majembe, he said, reported that he successfully invested the initial sum and has now pledged to return a sum of thirty thousand shillings back to the public official.
Mosiiria shared that the returned money is explicitly earmarked to support vulnerable and needy children within the community.
“I will also look for Mbavu. And because I once gave him that Ksh3,000, Majembe has now told me that he was able to invest that money, and he will give me back Ksh30,000 so I can support needy children,” he said.
