Father’s Day: Chiki Kuruka celebrates men who helped shape her life
Kenyan singer Bien-Aimé Baraza’s wife and manager, Chiki Kuruka, has paid tribute to the men who have played significant roles in her life, using Father’s Day to reflect on the support system that has surrounded her since childhood.
In a heartfelt message shared on her Instagram page on Sunday, June 21, Chiki opened up about her family, revealing that while she comes from a strong matriarchal background, she has also been fortunate to experience the presence of dependable men who have consistently shown up for her.
Her message stood out as she chose to celebrate not only fathers, but also uncles, friends and her husband, whom she credits for helping shape her journey.

Growing up with dependable male figures
Chiki began by reflecting on her upbringing, noting that her family has always been led by strong women. However, she said this often made it easy to overlook the equally important role played by the men around her.
According to her, she grew up knowing that her father and uncles would always be available whenever she needed them, whether for practical support or simply companionship. “My family is a really strong matriarchy, so it’s easy to forget how blessed I’ve always been with a differently strong patriarchy, “she said.

She went on to explain that their presence was something she rarely questioned while growing up because it felt normal.
“I’ve always taken it for granted that my dad and uncles would show up, be present, be a phone call away, and have a bed for me to sleep on. From picking me up at the airport to watching Love Island with me,” she explained.
A lesson realised in adulthood
As she reflected on those experiences, Chiki admitted that adulthood has given her a different perspective on the value of having reliable male figures in her life. She acknowledged that not everyone grows up with the kind of support she received, making her appreciate it even more today.
“I realise as an adult how extremely rare this is, “she wrote. Chiki noted that the examples set by her father and uncles helped shape her understanding of healthy relationships with men.
Chiki also credited the men in her family for influencing how she relates to male friends. She revealed that their presence helped her develop strong platonic friendships and a dependable circle of male friends whom she considers family. “Because of them, I’ve never struggled with the notion of platonic male friendships and have amassed a brotherhood that I depend on,” she said.

She added that she continues encouraging those around her to become the best versions of themselves for the benefit of their families and communities.
A special message to her husband
While celebrating the men who have supported her throughout life, Chiki reserved special praise for her husband.

Although he is not a father in the biological sense, she said his commitment to supporting those around him continues to inspire her daily.
“And most importantly, to my husband. You aren’t a dad in the biological sense, but the way you support everyone remains a daily inspiration. The way you hold us down is what allows me to shine,” she stated.
