Comedian Eddie Butita has shared an emotional message paying tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo following Portugal’s exit from the World Cup.

The comedian spoke about the difficult emotions that come with football, saying he celebrated Spain’s victory while also feeling sad for the Portuguese star. His message focused on Ronaldo’s impact on the game and the legacy he leaves behind.

“Football can be cruel,” Butita wrote on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.

He explained that although he has supported Spain for years, this time his emotions were different because of Cristiano Ronaldo. According to Butita, the football legend has earned respect from many people through his long and successful career.

“I’ve supported Spain for years, but tonight my heart had room for one more man, Cristiano Ronaldo,” Butita said.

Butita said the final whistle brought mixed emotions for him. He explained that while Spain had won, he also felt football was saying goodbye to an important chapter in Ronaldo’s World Cup journey.

“As the final whistle blew, I celebrated Spain’s victory, yet a part of me mourned the end of an era. Mixed emotions are what football does best,” Butita said.

Remembering a football legend

Butita went on to praise Ronaldo for the influence he has had beyond scoring goals. He said the Portuguese captain inspired people to believe in themselves, stay disciplined, work hard, and always aim for greatness throughout his career.

“Cristiano gave us more than goals. He gave us belief, discipline, resilience, unforgettable moments, and a relentless pursuit of greatness. He inspired millions to dream bigger, work harder, and never settle,” Butita said.

He also admitted that he wished Ronaldo’s World Cup story had ended differently. According to Butita, winning the World Cup would have been the perfect ending for a player who changed football over the past two decades.

Butita said a player’s legacy should not only be judged by the trophies they fail to win. He explained that the lives they touch and the inspiration they leave behind are just as important.

“But perhaps legends aren’t measured by the trophies they don’t win; they’re remembered by the lives they change,” Butita said.

“Thank you, Cristiano, for over two decades of magic, passion, and unforgettable memories. The World Cup may move on, but your legacy never will.”

“The stage may close, but legends never leave,” Butita added.

Portugal was bundled out of the global showpiece after Mikel Merino delivered the game-winner just after the 90-minute mark.
