Ronaldo confirms 2026 tournament is his last World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup will mark the end of his legendary international career.

The 41-year-old superstar made the announcement on Sunday, July 5, 2026, ahead of Portugal’s round of 16 clash against Spain at the Dallas Stadium in Texas.

The Selecao will play the European champions in a crucial knockout encounter on Monday, July 6, 2026, at 10:00 pm.

Ronaldo, who joined Lionel Messi and Guillermo Ochoa in an elite group of players appearing in a record-breaking sixth World Cup, however, did not disclose when he would call time on his international career, instead keeping the focus entirely on the pitch.

“I want to enjoy it as much as possible because it will be my last World Cup. But I hope tomorrow won’t be my last game. I will retire when I want to, not when you want me to. It is a waste of time to keep asking that question. The most important thing is tomorrow,” he told the press ahead of the match

Quiet World Cup run

While rival heavyweights like Messi, Erling Haaland, and Kylian Mbappé are flying high on goal-laden campaigns, the Portuguese skipper has endured a quieter campaign. Yet, he remained defiant and optimistic about his personal achievement and contribution to the squad.

“I do not think I’ve been doing that badly… I have scored three goals,” he pointed out. “Others have scored more because they are doing very well. But let’s see if I can score tomorrow.”

Reflecting on his historic journey, the Al Nassr striker spoke passionately about his legacy, emphasising that the game has bountifully rewarded his hard work and dedication, having given his all to the sport.

Historic achievements

“The day will come when my international career ends, but whatever happens tomorrow, I will leave with a clear conscience,” he said. “I have given everything to football. I do not need it; I live well, but it is about passion. You have to enjoy it day to day.”

Should a defeat to Spain mark the end of his involvement in the World Cup, the decorated football icon will bow out as one of the most prolific icons.
