Dolly Parton’s sister Stella condemns misinformation and online negativity after singer’s death

Dolly Parton’s sister Stella Parton has spoken out against the misinformation and insensitive comments directed at her family following the death of the country music legend.

Nearly two weeks after Dolly died at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, Stella addressed the negativity her family has faced online, saying it had been difficult for them to deal with as they mourned their loss.

Stella thanks fans for their support

In a statement shared on Instagram on September 4, 2026, Stella thanked people who had shown genuine support and love to the family during their time of mourning.

“First let me say, thank you to the ones of you who have shown ‘genuine’ support and love during this time of our family bereavement. We will be okay in time, but each of us will grieve in our own personal way,” Stella wrote.

The 77-year-old said grief affects everyone differently and that her family was no different despite having lived much of their lives in the public eye.

She explained that being well known had also exposed the family to pressure and insensitive comments from strangers at a time when they were dealing with their loss.

“Every human being experiences pain and loss in life, and my family is no different. Sadly, because of the way our lives have been lived in front of the public, we have no choice but to be subjected to incredible pressure and insensitivity from strangers,” Stella added.

Stella raises concern over AI content

Stella also criticised the amount of false and misleading material being shared online following her sister’s death.

She said some of the content circulating on social media had been created or altered using artificial intelligence, adding that dealing with the posts had been difficult for the family.

“A tremendous amount of AI and endless garbage [is] being posted every day and it’s been challenging to absorb or ignore,” Stella said.

The negativity, however, has not only involved misleading posts. Stella said some of the comments had also brought back painful experiences from her childhood.

She recalled how she and Dolly had faced hurtful remarks while growing up and said those experiences had left deep wounds that were still painful. “The feeling of being told you were less than, undeserving or insignificant was a deep wound on all of us as children,” Stella said.

She added that she had walked alongside Dolly throughout her life and had witnessed and experienced some of the same insults and criticism, including during the period following her sister’s death.

Dolly’s family remembers her influence

Despite the negative comments, Stella said her sister would have been pleased by the amount of love and support shown to her and her family.

She described Dolly as someone who loved her fans and the public and used her music to have a positive influence on others.

“My big sister Dolly would be surprised and delighted by the love her family and she has been shown during this time. She loved her fans and the public in general,” Stella explained.

Stella said Dolly had used her music not only as a career but also as a way of encouraging people and bringing a positive message to the world.

“My sister was a positive influence to the world into which she was born. She used her music as a tool and a passion to move people positively,” she added.

Stella calls for kindness

As her family continues to deal with the loss, Stella urged people to show greater kindness and respect when discussing others, particularly during difficult moments.

She asked people to look at Dolly’s life as an example of how tolerance and respect can make a difference. “I ask that you show more compassion and wisdom as we move forward in life. Use my sister’s life as an example for tolerance and respect toward others,” Stella said.

She also encouraged people to think about how their words and actions might affect them in the long run. “At the end of the day or the end of a life, how will you feel about yourself? It’s not about what other individuals you will never meet think of you!” she added.

Dolly’s nephew remembers her

Dolly’s nephew Bryan Seaver had earlier announced her death on August 25, 2026, saying the singer had been dealing with a private health battle.

In a video announcing her passing, Bryan spoke about the role Dolly played in the lives of her family members and the opportunities she helped create for them.

“Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible,” Bryan said.

He also reflected on the memories shared by the family and Dolly’s millions of fans, noting that her music and public presence had made her feel like part of many people’s families.

“Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever,” Bryan added.
