Dolly Parton’s team has confirmed that the country music legend died aged 80 on August 25, 2026, after a brief battle with cancer. Parton, who was hospitalised in Nashville, Tennessee, died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by members of her family and loved ones.

Her team confirmed the cause of death in a statement, while also reflecting on the singer’s long career and the impact she had outside music.

“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” her team said in a statement.

Parton’s legacy beyond music

The singer was remembered not only for her music but also for the work she did through her charitable projects.

Her Imagination Library, which provides books to children, has donated hundreds of millions of books. Parton also supported medical research, including work linked to the development of a COVID-19 vaccine.

Her team said her kindness remained an important part of her legacy. “Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched,” the statement read.

Her nephew Bryan Seaver also paid tribute to the singer, saying she had helped open opportunities for many people, including members of her own family.

“Dolly opened doors not just for me, but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn’t even know was possible,” Seaver said in an Instagram video shared on August 25, 2026.

He added that her example had encouraged generations of singers, songwriters and musicians to believe that they could achieve their goals.

Health challenges forced her off stage

Parton continued working in music in the years before her death, including appearing on Beyoncé’s 2024 country album Cowboy Carter. She also released the 2026 song Light of a Clear Blue Morning with Lainey Wilson, Miley Cyrus, Reba McEntire and Queen Latifah.

However, health problems forced the singer to make changes to her plans for live performances. In September 2025, Parton announced that she was postponing her planned Las Vegas residency because she was not well enough to prepare for the shows.

“I am not going to be able to rehearse and put together the show that I want you to see, and the show that you deserve to see,” she said in an Instagram video.

She later missed an 80th birthday celebration concert at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville in January 2026, although she sent a message to fans attending the event.

Parton spoke openly about her treatment

Parton later explained that she was responding well to medication and treatment but needed more time before returning to live performances.

“I’m responding really well to meds and treatments, and I’m improving every day,” she said.

She also revealed that she had developed kidney stones during her health problems, joking about the number of stones doctors had removed. Despite the challenges, Parton reassured her fans that she was receiving treatment and remained hopeful.

“I have great doctors, and I’m doing really well,” she said. “They assure me that everything I have is treatable, so I’m going with that.”

Parton appeared in good spirits in July 2026 when she attended the opening of Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop, a rest area along Interstate 65 in Cornersville.

Her death now brings an end to the life of an artist whose influence stretched beyond country music, with her songs, charitable work and support for children forming a lasting part of her legacy.
