DCI confirms the arrest of Eric Omondi at JKIA
By Katemarthason Okudo, June 5, 2026The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the arrest of comedian and activist Eric Omondi following investigations linked to the recent fuel-related protests in Nairobi.
According to detectives, Omondi was arrested on June 5, 2026, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) after officers acted on what they described as credible intelligence. He is currently being held at the Nairobi Region DCI Headquarters, where he is recording a statement ahead of his expected arraignment in court.
The DCI says the arrest is part of ongoing investigations into incidents that occurred during the demonstrations, where several other suspects have already been apprehended and presented in court. Authorities maintain that while the Constitution protects the right to peaceful assembly and demonstration, any unlawful acts committed during protests will be investigated and prosecuted.
In a brief statement, investigators noted that the suspect is being processed in line with the law, adding that the case forms part of wider efforts to maintain order during public demonstrations.

Dramatic claims before arrest
Moments before confirmation of his detention, Omondi had triggered public concern after posting on social media alleging that he had been intercepted by eight unidentified men while travelling. The message, shared from what appeared to be a moving vehicle, quickly went viral and sparked confusion among supporters and observers.

“Just been arrested by a group of 8 men in a grey Subaru. I have no idea where we are headed!!!” he wrote, a post that fuelled speculation online about his whereabouts before authorities later confirmed he was in lawful custody.
Background to the investigations
Omondi’s arrest comes amid heightened inspection over the conduct of individuals linked to recent protests in the capital. Law enforcement agencies have been pursuing suspects accused of participating in unlawful activities during the demonstrations.
The activist, who has previously positioned himself as a vocal critic of governance issues, has in the past been arrested in connection with protest-related incidents. His latest detention now adds to a growing list of confrontations with law enforcement.

Law enforcement message
Authorities have reiterated that while citizens are free to express themselves through peaceful demonstrations, any actions that cross into criminal conduct will not be tolerated.
As investigations continue, Omondi remains in custody as detectives prepare case files for court proceedings.
