Brandy Maina opens up on pain, depression and losing herself before album

Singer Brandy Maina has opened up about the painful period she went through before releasing her album, saying she forgot who she was and became numb during the difficult time.
Maina said the journey behind the album was marked by pain and meltdowns, leaving her struggling with her identity. She explained that she felt deeply depressed and had only God during a period when her friends had left.
“Before the album, there was pain and meltdowns; I forgot who I was. All I had was God; all my friends left, sleep was a rumour,” Brandy Maina said on Monday, September 21, 2026.

Maina said she also used different means to escape her reality during the difficult period. She explained that the experience affected her deeply and eventually left her feeling numb.
“Used any means to escape my reality; I was deeply depressed here, and I became numb,” Maina said.
The painful journey behind her album
Maina said making the album was not easy and described the journey as sad and painful. She explained that despite the struggles she faced during that period, she is grateful she did not give up on herself.
“The process behind the journey to my album was hella sad and painful,” Brandy Maina said.
The singer said the album has since helped her move away from the version of herself she knew before. She explained that she now feels different after going through the process and completing the project.
“But I’m glad I didn’t give up on me, and I can now say I have a project that has released me from a version I used to know,” Maina said.

Maina added that the change she has gone through has left her seeing herself differently. She said she is not the same person she was before, even though she is still trying to understand the new version of herself.
“I’m different now, even if I don’t know her yet,” Brandy Maina said.
Her comments come days after she also spoke about her struggle with hirsutism and how the condition has affected different parts of her life. Maina shared the experience during PCOS Awareness Month while speaking about her health and the challenges she has faced.
“I have something called PMOS, but people call it PCOS. And if I am getting into details, I have something called hirsutism. I hope I am saying it right,” Brandy Maina said.
Maina said the journey surrounding her album was painful, but she is glad she continued despite the difficult period. She described the project as one that helped her leave behind a version of herself she used to know.
