Kenyan influencer and digital content creator Carrol Sonnie has opened up about a difficult season in her life marked by body shaming, depression and harsh public criticism.

In a statement shared on her Instagram page on Thursday, February 26, 2026, Sonnie reflected on a photo of herself taken in 2022, a time she now describes as one of her lowest moments.

She revealed that during that period, she had lost a significant amount of weight, something that quickly became a topic of discussion online. Instead of concern, she says she was met with insults and hurtful comments from some social media users. A section of followers mocked her appearance, while others went as far as speculating that she was unwell.

According to Sonnie, the weight loss was not by choice. She was silently battling depression at the time. The mental strain affected her physically, leaving her looking frail and overwhelmed. She even shaved her hair, a decision she says came at the height of her struggles.

The mother of one shared that depression had become part of her daily life then. However, she credits therapy, self-love, self-awareness and choosing peace of mind for helping her slowly rebuild herself.

Sonnie said she decided to post the old photo not for sympathy, but to encourage anyone who may be going through a similar experience. She noted that healing is possible and that loving yourself is an important step toward recovery.

She encouraged her followers to prioritise their well-being and reminded them that change begins with an individual’s decision to take control of their life.

“This was me in 2022, and let me tell you maina… some of you really insulted me for my weight, others even told me I was sick. Hapa nilikua nimekonda hadi ikabidii nimenyoa, depression was my cup of tea every day. Thank God for therapy and self-love and self-awareness, na pia peace of mind. I am posting this to encourage someone out there. Everything is possible. Love yourself more and take care of yourself. The only person who will save you from your situation is YOU. Love you. Do you?” Sonnie shared.

Weight gain

Her latest message comes months after she found herself at the centre of online criticism over her body. In November 2025, TikToker Shikie Kariuki publicly mocked her weight gain in a series of videos, making remarks about her stomach and overall body shape.

The comments sparked debate on social media, with many calling out the culture of tearing women down over their appearance.

At the time, Sonnie responded calmly but firmly. She expressed disappointment that a fellow woman would focus on her body instead of minding her own business. She also pointed out that the TikToker often comments on other people’s lives but becomes defensive when the spotlight turns on her. After reviewing the videos, Sonnie chose not to engage further, saying there was nothing constructive to respond to and advising her critic to relax and enjoy life.
