Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has appealed for calm and understanding following the circulation of a viral video showing a woman in a vulnerable state while intoxicated at an entertainment venue in Nairobi.

In a statement shared on his Instagram page on Sunday, January 19, 2025, Salasya addressed rumours surrounding the incident and efforts to resolve the matter amicably. He said he had spoken to Nairobi County Government’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Care, Geoffrey Mosiria, regarding reports that the man linked to the incident had been arrested at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

“I have talked with @geoffrey_mosiria concerning the rumours of the arrest of Mr Opunde at JKIA police station, and I have confirmed Mr Opunde hasn’t been arrested,” Salasya said.

He added that he had advised Mosiria and the woman involved to withdraw any statements that may have been recorded and said he was willing to bring the parties together to resolve the matter without financial demands.

“I have accepted to unite the girl, Mosiria and Opunde on any issue without exchanging money, but as friends and people who understand that what happened was because both were tipsy. Kenyans boy child ako sawa na hajashikwa ignore the rumours,” Salasya stated.

Mosiria meets Marion

Salasya’s remarks come amid public outrage after a video circulated online showing a woman, later identified as Marion Napei Sinkeet, being recorded inside an entertainment place while visibly intoxicated. In the clip, she is seen being exposed without her consent, triggering widespread condemnation and online shaming.

Mosiria, who met Marion following the incident, condemned the recording and sharing of the video, saying he felt compelled to speak out despite criticism directed at him.

Taking to his Facebook page on Sunday, January 18, 2025, Mosiria said he did not know the woman personally but could not stay silent.

“My integrity, conscience, and sound mind could not allow me to keep quiet,” he said.

He described what happened to Marion as cruel and unlawful, stressing that recording someone without consent and exposing them to the public violated their dignity.

“What was done to her, being recorded without consent and exposed to the world, was cruel, degrading, and unlawful,” Mosiria said.

He noted that the incident took place in a club environment and said it was still unclear how the clip ended up online, but once shared, it spread rapidly across social media platforms, attracting harsh commentary and ridicule.

Mosiria warned that online humiliation can have serious mental health consequences and urged Kenyans to reflect on the impact of their words.

“Ask yourselves this: what if she had taken her own life because of the shame, pressure, and online attacks?” he posed.

He urged the public to view the woman as someone’s sister, daughter, wife, friend, or mother, saying she deserved protection under the law like any other Kenyan.

Mosiria also condemned those attempting to justify the incident, insisting that wrongdoing should be called out regardless of who is involved.

“If standing for what is right makes me unpopular, then so be it. I will continue to speak, because silence only empowers abusers,” he said.

Quoting the Bible, Mosiria reminded critics that no one is without fault.

“Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her,” he said, citing John 8:7.

He maintained that even individuals accused of serious wrongdoing are entitled to a fair and humane process, adding that Marion’s case should be handled with justice, dignity and respect, rather than public shaming.
