Boina explains why washroom attendants should always get tipped

Food content creator Boina has urged Kenyans to remember the often-overlooked staff in restaurants and clubs, washroom attendants, saying they deserve recognition and tips.
In an Instagram post on Sunday, February 22, 2026, she highlighted how these workers play a crucial role in ensuring hygiene and comfort, yet are frequently ignored when it comes to gratuities.
Boina explained that while bartenders and waitstaff typically receive tips for serving food and drinks, washroom attendants rarely get the acknowledgement they deserve.
“Just a kind reminder to tip the person you meet in a restaurant or club after washing the washrooms, so leave the bartender and those who sell shots and all the waitresses,” she said.
She added that many of these attendants work long hours, sometimes during late-night shifts, maintaining facilities that patrons often take for granted.
Tips reflect appreciation
According to Boina, tipping goes beyond monetary value; it is a way of showing appreciation for service that is crucial but invisible.
She stressed that even small contributions, ranging from Ksh100 to Ksh500 depending on the setting, make a significant difference to the workers’ livelihoods.
“Depending on where you are from, maybe I won’t tell you, but like they are doing something that is very overlooked. It’s a very overlooked job,” she added.

Boina emphasised that tipping should not be viewed as an obligation, but as recognition of the hard work these attendants do quietly while customers enjoy their meals or drinks.
She highlighted that their contribution, though often unseen, is essential to the overall experience of dining or visiting a club.
Boina also served as a reminder to treat all service workers with respect. She explained that tipping should not be limited to visible roles like waiters or bartenders. “These attendants don’t serve tables, but they contribute to the experience you enjoy,” she said.
