Bishop Kiengei hails rains as prayers answered after devastating drought

City preacher Benson Gathungu, popularly known as Bishop Kiengei, has celebrated rains in the country, coming after a prolonged drought that evolved into a crisis.
The founder of Jesus Compassion Ministries (JCM) hailed the rains as an answered prayer as he continues his fasting and prayer mission that is on the 38th day.
The clergyman, who is also widely known as Guka wa Nairobi, thanked God for the rains that continue to pound different parts of the country.
In a statement on his social media accounts on Tuesday, February 18, 2026, Kiengei stated that God has answered prayers, bringing the negative stories of drought to an end.

“Thank you for answering our prayers, oh God, the negative reports about the drought were just announced by a man, you had your final report. The rains are here, we don’t take it for granted,” Kiengei said.
Rains in several parts of the country
Several parts of the country received rainfall over the last few days, with the weatherman predicting more rains.
A severe drought swept through several counties in Kenya, leaving millions on the brink of starvation as the government stared at a crisis and aid agencies rushed to mitigate the situation.
Apart from being a crisis, the drought turned into a new battlefront for politicians, with jabs flying across.
Politicians clash over drought
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua fired the first salvo, accusing the government of doing little to help those impacted ahead of a planned visit by President William Ruto to the North Eastern parts of the country that were severely affected.
The fierce criticism generated heat, with DP Kithure Kindiki firing at a politician who he claimed was sacked as a District Officer (DO) for stealing food meant for drought relief, but has now turned into a fierce advocate and a vocal critic of the government’s handling of the drought in the country.

According to Kindiki, the politician in question stole from people in the same situation that the politician has been vocal about and therefore lacks the moral authority to criticise drought mitigation measures, having stolen from people in need.
“You were sacked as a District Officer (DO) for stealing food meant for drought relief. You have no moral authority to give lectures on drought mitigation,” Kindiki stated.
