Billie Eilish to make acting debut in ‘The Bell Jar’ movie
By William Muthama, March 12, 2026Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Billie Eilish is set to make her big-screen acting debut in the movie The Bell Jar, based on Sylvia Plath’s semi-autobiographical novel.
According to Deadline, the 24-year-old is in advanced talks for the lead role, marking a major step into acting after her acclaimed music career and her TV appearance in the series Swarm.
“I used to say that I hated acting,” Eilish said during a Saturday Night Live monologue. “But the truth is, when I was little, I loved it! My mom and dad were both actors. So is my brother, Finneas. And it was my dream to be in a movie.”
The story behind the movie
The Bell Jar follows a young female writer navigating mental illness and societal pressures in the 1950s. According to the book’s synopsis, it is a deeply personal story exploring themes of identity, ambition, and emotional turmoil.
The novel was published just before Plath’s death, making it both a literary classic and a window into the author’s own experiences.

The film will be released by Focus Features in the United States, with international distribution reportedly in progress.
According to reports, while a previous 1979 adaptation of The Bell Jar received mixed reviews, this new movie has generated significant buzz, particularly because of Eilish’s casting and the promise of a fresh, high-profile production.
Billie Eilish’s growing career
Eilish has already achieved groundbreaking success in music. She became the first artist to win the Grammy for Song of the Year three times and has earned two Oscars for Best Original Song for the No Time to Die and Barbie soundtracks.
According to James Cameron, her 3D concert documentary, Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft, is also set for theatrical release later this year.
Eilish’s move into movies marks an exciting chapter in her career. The role promises to challenge her creatively while bringing one of literature’s most iconic stories to the screen.
With the combination of literary prestige and Eilish’s cultural influence, The Bell Jar movie could become a defining moment in her career one that introduces her acting to a global audience while honouring the depth of Sylvia Plath’s work.
