Singer Bahati was forced to abandon his car at the Central Police Station after being trapped in heavy rain and worsening traffic in Nairobi.

The night of Friday, March 7, 2026, was chaotic, with countless motorists stuck for hours as torrential downpours flooded the streets and brought the city to a standstill.

Unable to continue, he left his vehicle with the assistance of police officers who recorded it inside the station for safety, before taking a boda boda to reach his destination.

Sasa juu mvua imekua nataka kuingia hapa stenge niwaachie hii gari central police station. I’m coming, nawa ambia leo nasaidiwa na officer,” Bahati said.

Bahati hopped on a boda boda, recording the moment and explaining that he had no choice, as navigating the roads had become nearly impossible.

Nairobi floods cause chaos

The ongoing heavy rains have caused severe flooding in several parts of Nairobi and surrounding areas, forcing road closures and leaving countless commuters stranded.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, affected neighbourhoods include Pipeline and Embakasi, Mukuru (Kwa Njenga, Reuben, Viwandani), Kibra, Mathare, Huruma, Baba Dogo, Bosnia, South B and South C, Nairobi West, Lang’ata, Umoja 3, Chokaa, Njiru, Ruai, Utawala, Roysambu, Kahawa West, Githurai, Loresho, and parts of Westlands.

Major roads were submerged, disrupting traffic across the city. Sections of the CBD, Uhuru Highway, Mbagathi Way, Mombasa Road from South C to JKIA exit, Thika Superhighway (Githurai to Kahawa Sukari), Jogoo Road, Lunga Lunga Road, Enterprise Road, and Lang’ata Road near T-Mall were heavily affected.

Videos shared online show motorists struggling to navigate flooded streets, with many forced to abandon their vehicles.

MC Jimmie Kajim described Lang’ata Road as “literally like a river flowing on the highway,” highlighting the severity of the situation.

Residents reported delays of several hours, with some areas completely cut off. Many expressed frustration over the city’s lack of preparedness for the annual rains.

The Kenya Red Cross has urged communities to stay alert and take precautions as more rain is expected. The floods have also underscored the vulnerability of Nairobi’s infrastructure and the need for improved drainage and emergency response systems.
