Actress Charlize Theron opens up on night her mother shot her father in self-defense

The Oscar-winning actress spoke about the incident, explaining how it shaped her life and deepened her bond with her mother.
In an interview with The New York Times published on April 18, 2026, Theron said the moment, though traumatic, helped her understand her mother’s actions. She explained that what once felt like shock later became clarity about survival and protection.
“We were always very close. We felt like a team,” she said.
She added that with time, she came to see the event differently. According to her, the realisation that her mother acted to protect her life changed how she processed the experience.
“That night changed it because in retrospect, once I got out of the shock of it, I realised that she saved my life,” Theron said in an article by E! News on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.
The actress explained that the incident took place in 1990 when she was 15 years old. She and her mother, Gerda Theron, had returned home from watching a movie only to find themselves locked out of their house. She said her father, Charles Theron, had taken the key.
A history of alcoholism
According to Theron, the home had multiple steel doors, a reflection of the tense environment at the time. She explained that her father had a history of alcoholism, and they suspected he was nearby drinking with his brother. When they went to find him, they found both men intoxicated.
“My dad had taken the key to the front steel door,” she explained.
She said she briefly entered the house to use the bathroom without greeting anyone, which angered her father. She noted that cultural expectations around respect for elders played a role in how he reacted, especially in his condition.
“And he was in a state where he just spiralled,” she said.
After leaving, Theron and her mother sensed danger. Later that night, her father returned home with his brother, and the situation escalated quickly. Fearing for their safety, her mother retrieved a gun and rushed with her into a bedroom.
Theron said her father began shooting through the door, but none of the bullets hit them. Moments later, as the threat continued, her mother acted.
“She saved my life,” Theron said again, reflecting on the moment.
