A woman has been arrested in Kandara, Murang’a County, after detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) raided her home and recovered a huge amount of bhang.

According to police, the lady was caught after a public tip-off that helped officers track her down.

During the operation, which took place on Thursday evening, July 18, 2025, detectives discovered 13 large gunny bags filled with bhang.

The recovered drugs are believed to weigh 225 kilograms and have an estimated street value of Ksh6.7 million.

In addition to the bhang, officers also found packaging materials that pointed to a well-organised distribution network. Police believe the woman was a key player in a wider trafficking ring supplying cannabis.

“She is currently in custody and is being processed for court,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed in a statement shared on Friday, July 18, 2025.

The narcotics have been safely stored as evidence, while investigators continue with inquiries to identify more members of the network and where the drugs were being delivered.

The DCI praised the public for their cooperation and urged Kenyans to continue sharing information that can help dismantle drug networks in the country.

Nationwide drug crackdown

This latest seizure adds to a string of successful crackdowns on narcotics across Kenya in recent weeks.

On July 1, police in Kamulu, Nairobi County, recovered 5,660 rolls of bhang in a separate sting operation. The suspect in that case is also awaiting trial.

On the same day, in Narok East Sub-County, officers intercepted a Prado ferrying 600 brooms of bhang. The vehicle was found abandoned after a high-speed chase, and the two suspects fled into maize fields.

Earlier in March, two men were arrested in Kimbo area with 800 rolls of bhang and digital weighing scales, evidence of another well-organised trafficking setup.

Authorities say the arrests are part of a nationwide crackdown on drug trafficking, with law enforcement agencies now focusing on intelligence-led raids in known hotspots.
