Police intercept vehicle with over 300kg of bhang in Kericho as driver escapes arrest

Police in Kericho County have intercepted a major narcotics haul after a dramatic chase along the Kericho–Molo–Nakuru Highway.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement issued on their official X account on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, said police officers stated that they recovered over 300 kg of bhang.

The officers from Kericho revealed that while acting on a tip-off, they intercepted a motor vehicle suspected of trafficking narcotics.

“Over 300kg of bhang recovered in Kericho County. Acting on a tip-off, police in Kericho intercepted a motor vehicle suspected of trafficking narcotics,” police said.

According to the police, the vehicle was first flagged down at the Londiani Junction; however, the rider defied orders to stop and sped off towards the Kericho–Molo–Nakuru Highway.

After the dramatic speed chase, the rider eventually gave up and abandoned his vehicle at the Mau Summit and took off on the run by foot.

“The vehicle was first flagged down at Londiani Junction, but the driver defied orders to stop, prompting a pursuit along the Kericho–Molo–Nakuru Highway. The driver eventually abandoned the vehicle at Mau Summit and escaped,” police noted.

Police further revealed that after conducting a thorough search of the abandoned vehicle, officers recovered 69 bales of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 310.5 kilograms.

The officers say the suspect, who is still at large, is being pursued and will face charges once arrested.

“Upon conducting a thorough search of the abandoned vehicle, officers recovered 69 bales of cannabis sativa, weighing a total of 310.5 kilograms. Efforts are actively underway to trace and apprehend the driver,” NPS said.

NPS further reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing criminals and dismantling the wider network involved in trafficking narcotics within the region.

“This operation not only disrupted a major drug-trafficking attempt but also reaffirms the resolve of the National Police Service to pursue criminals and dismantle the wider network involved in trafficking narcotics within the region,” NPS said.

Homa Bay crackdown

In a similar incident, police in Homa Bay recently intercepted a major narcotics haul after a dramatic chase along the Ndhiwa–Sori Road.

The National Police Service (NPS), in a statement issued on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, via X, said that officers from Ndhiwa Police Station were on routine patrol when they flagged down a suspicious motorcycle carrying the rider, two pillion passengers, and a bulky piece of luggage during the morning hours.

According to the police, the rider defied orders to stop and sped off towards Rodi. A hot pursuit ensued, forcing the persons of interest to abandon the motorcycle and flee into a nearby thicket.

“Upon being flagged down, the rider defied the order and sped off towards Rodi, prompting a chase. During the pursuit, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and fled into a nearby thicket,” the statement read.
