Meru: 15 bales of bhang recovered as police escalate war on illicit drugs
By David Nthua, October 31, 2025Even before the dust settles on the Mombasa drug bust that saw six people arrested over a Ksh8.2 billion trafficking syndicate, police officers in Meru have done it again.
This time, they have recovered 15 bales of cannabis sativa hidden inside a lorry that was reportedly being transported to an unknown location.

Through a statement on X on Friday, October 31, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that the seizure was made following a well-coordinated operation in Imenti North, Meru County.
Acting on a tip-off from members of the public, officers from the NPS in Meru intercepted the vehicle along the Ruiri-Nchiru Road, where it was stopped and searched.
“Acting on a tip-off, officers from the National Police Service in Meru County intercepted an Isuzu lorry along the Ruiri-Nchiru Road in Imenti North Sub-County.

“Upon searching the vehicle, they discovered 15 bales of cannabis sativa hidden in a secret compartment,” the NPS statement read in part.
The police said the lorry was later towed to Meru Police Station, where the recovered drugs were secured as exhibits.
Investigators have since launched a manhunt for the driver, who managed to flee the scene before his arrest.

The authorities have confirmed that persons of interest linked to the illegal consignment are already being questioned as part of ongoing investigations.
“The vehicle was towed to Meru Police Station, where it is being held for further investigation. The drugs have been secured as evidence at the same station,” the statement added.
NPS commends public cooperation
Police have vowed to intensify their crackdown on narcotics trafficking networks across the country, noting that the trade continues to threaten lives and destabilise communities.

The NPS commended members of the public for providing reliable intelligence that led to the successful recovery, urging continued collaboration in the fight against drugs.
