A Kisumu man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after being found guilty of manslaughter.

The man, Vincent Odhiambo Okeyo will be forced to spend the next three decades at a government holding facility after he was found guilty of poisoning his two children.

Mr. Odhiambo was accused of poisoning his two children, namely Edwin Oluoch and Ronald Ochieng which led to the death of one of them.

In a case led by state prosecutor Mercy Mutheu Muema, the accused was initially charged with murder under sections 203 and 204 of the penal code.

The accused pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter after plea negotiations through his legal representative were accepted by the prosecution.

The prosecution emphasized the gravity of the crime, a father ending his child’s life, and proposed for a custodial sentence to serve as an example to the rest of the society.

The presiding judge, Lady Justice Mwanaisha Shariff highlighted the accused’s failure in meeting his paternal duty of protecting his child, choosing to end the child’s life instead.

During the ruling, she also underlined that family safety should always remain paramount.
