Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended a suspected four-man gang linked to car-breaking in Lang’ata Estate, Nairobi, and stealing Ksh850,000.

According to DCI’s statement on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the four were rounded up following a series of investigations conducted by detectives involving the car-breaking incident.

The four have been identified as Shaban Maingi Rashid, Steve Malvin Njagi, Johnson Muisyo Mbingu, and Mashud Onyango Dax, alias Sudi.

How it happened

The four are accused of trailing the victim from a local bank where he had withdrawn Ksh850,000 and stashed in an envelope. The motorist then drove to the supermarket along Lang’ata Road.

After shopping, the motorist returned to a rude shock, realising that all his money had been stolen and the car was broken.

“In yet another operation intended to cleanse our streets of notorious thugs known for stealing from locked motor vehicles, a team of detectives drawn from the Nairobi regional headquarters has arrested a four-man gang that stole Ksh850,000 from a locked motor vehicle in Langata.

“The arrest is a culmination of painstaking investigations arising from a report at Langata police station where a resident of South C Green Estate 2 lost part of his money that he had withdrawn from a local bank on July 17, 2024,” DCI’s statement read in part.

The four were, however, arrested after CCTV footage outside the supermarket captured them breaking into the car.

Detectives waylaid them on a highway, found a master key, and retrieved another set of number plates.

“At the time of arrest, the four were onboard a Suzuki Swift, but upon further search, the detectives recovered a master key and retrieved another set of number plates, KDP 989N, from inside the vehicle that also matched the vehicle’s insurance details,” DCI stated.

“The detectives have further established that one of the arrested, Shaban Maingi Rashid, has previously been arrested for similar offences within the Lang’ata area and has ongoing cases before the court.”
