Amason Kingi calls for swift investigation into Kyalo Mbobu’s killing

Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi has has condemned the killing of prominent city lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, urging police to move with speed in investigating the matter and bringing those responsible to justice.

Mbobu, a distinguished lawyer and former Chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), was fatally shot by unknown assailants in a drive-by attack before the attackers sped off on a motorcycle on Tuesday evening, September 9, 2025.

In a condolence message shared on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Kingi described Mbobu as an outstanding law scholar, a dedicated public servant, and a mentor to many young lawyers.

In addition to Kingi, lawyers have also demanded justice for the murder of Mbobu.

“The cold-blooded killing of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu this evening, as he drove home from work, has left us all devastated and in deep shock,” Kingi wrote.

“Wakili Kyalo Mbobu was a distinguished advocate of the High Court of Kenya, an outstanding law scholar and a dedicated public servant, having at one time served as Chairperson of the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal. I was honoured to be one of his students at the Parklands Campus of the University of Nairobi, where we benefited from his intellectual mentorship.”

He added that Kenyans expect law enforcement agencies to act with urgency to unravel the motive behind the crime and ensure those behind the heinous act face the law.

“As the country comes to terms with this chilling incident, we expect the police to carry out speedy and thorough investigations to unearth the reason and culprits behind this heinous crime and ensure justice is served,” he added.

Kingi further send a message of comfort to Mbobu’s family and friends during this difficult time.

“I join my colleagues in the legal fraternity and indeed all Kenyans, in mourning Wakili Kyalo Mbobu and praying that God gives his family, relatives and friends the fortitude to bear this immense loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he mourned.

Mbobu’s death

The city lawyer was shot dead in Nairobi on the evening of September 9, 2025.

According to the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Mbobu, an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over 30 years of practice, was fatally shot by unknown assailants in a drive-by attack before the attackers sped off on a motorcycle.

“This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and for the entire country. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Mbobu,” LSK President Faith Odhiambo said in a statement.

“Too often, advocates have been victimised and targeted for the work they do. This incident and other acts of violence against advocates represent a damning test to the administration of justice.”
