Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Abraham Korir Singóei has expressed his frustration with the abduction of former Nandi Hills Member of Parliament Alfred Keter.

In a statement on Sunday, June 30, 2024, PS Singóei boldly expressed his discountenance on how the former lawmaker was taken in broad daylight.

The Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary pointed out that the police needed to uphold the standard procedure of arresting any individual.

“There is a procedure for effecting an arrest. This is not one of them,” the Foreign Affairs PS statement read in part.

“We must resist the temptation to adopt extra-legal means even in the pursuit of legitimate objectives,” he stated.

The abduction ordeal

The video of Keter’s abduction, which has since gone viral, was recorded outside Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.

A group of more than four individuals were seen forcing Keter out of his black Landcruiser V8 just as he was leaving the church.

They were further recorded bundling him into an unmarked vehicle with sirens, while curious onlookers watched and recorded the event.

“Abducted, headed to unknown destination,” Keter wrote on his social media page moments later.

Keter, a vocal critic of President William Ruto’s regime, has been actively supporting the Anti-Finance Bill protests led by the young generation.

He also took part in various demonstrations and even rallied behind Gen Z over the rejection of the Finance Bill.

However, by the time of this publication, the security agencies had not issued a statement on the abduction ordeal.

Other reactions fo the abduction

Several other leaders have reacted to the abduction ordeal. Law Society of Kenya President Faith Odhiambo noted that the incident is a signal of the return of the dark era.

Other leaders who critised the government include Narc Kenya Party leader Martha Karua, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi.

“Today, the nation has witnessed the abduction of former Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter in Nairobi, another incident in a series of proliferating gangland-type kidnappings. This alarming trend, including the abduction of numerous young people that we have consistently and unequivocally condemned, heralds a grim future for the rule of law that Kenya prides itself on.

“Since the onset of the vehement opposition to oppressive economic policies mounted by young people, some of them remain missing, held incommunicado while their families are distressed about the whereabouts of their loved ones. This desperate attempt to instill fear in the public and silence dissent is unwarranted, uncalled for, and has no place in our nation,” Moi stated.
