Willy Paul calls on Ruto to erect a Raila Odinga statue in Nairobi CBD

In an Instagram post on Monday, October 20, 2025, the ‘Ngunga’ hitmaker revealed that he had just landed back in the city after a successful show in Meru and also suggested the establishment of a national day to honour Raila Odinga.
Willy Paul expressed his admiration for Raila, describing him as a figure whose legacy should be permanently celebrated.
“Meru was a success. Happy Mashujaa Day. We need a Raila statue in Nairobi CBD; we need a Raila Day as well. I know President Ruto will grant that,” Willy Paul wrote.
Paul’s call comes amid continued national reflection on Raila Odinga’s passing, which has stirred deep emotions across Kenya following his death on October 15, 2025, in Kerala, India, where he had been receiving specialised treatment.

The late ODM leader’s funeral drew thousands of mourners, heads of state, foreign diplomats, political leaders, and ordinary citizens, culminating in a private burial at his ancestral home in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
The ceremony marked the end of a transformative era in Kenyan politics and celebrated the life of a man whose struggle for democracy spanned decades.
During the funeral, Raila Odinga’s casket, draped in the national flag, was lowered into the grave as military personnel presented a 17-gun salute.

President William Ruto led the tributes, hailing Raila as a patriot who always put Kenya above self, and urged citizens to honour his legacy through unity, courage, and commitment to democratic ideals.
The burial followed intense public viewings across the country, including a massive procession at Kasarani Stadium after plans at Parliament Buildings were adjusted due to the overwhelming turnout.
Security agencies ensured order as mourners filed past the casket, a continuous procession reflecting the nation’s deep respect and admiration.
