‘6 months of watching him in pain has not been easy’ – brother of late Vioja Mahakamani actor

Vioja Mahakamani actor Gibson Mbugua Gathu was laid to rest in Matundura village in North Kinangop, Nyandarua County on January 3, 2023.

Speaking during the funeral service, Gathu’s brother Dubson Kuria Mbugu painfully narrated the deceased’s last days before his death on December 22, 2022.

Dubson recalled how he was by his late brother’s side from the time he got sick and was admitted to Nairobi West hospital to when he was transferred to a hospital in Eldoret.

“Before I read the tribute on behalf of my brothers, I want to be selfish a little bit… I think in the midst of all my brothers, I have spent the most time with Gibson for the last six months. I was there when this journey started right from Nairobi West. I stood by this man, day in, day out. I continued with this man when he went to Eldoret – I went ahead of him – and all in all, I could say, this is a gentle soul that lays here,” Dubson eulogized his late brother.

Six months

Dubson further said that the late Vioja Mahakamani actor was in pain for the six months he was been sick before he succumbed.

“Six months of watching him in pain has not been easy. Six months of watching my eldest brother helpless has not been easy. And I think the breaking point of this was when one time I had to feed my brother. I never thought this would actually happen being the youngest because he always took care of us,” Dubson said.

He further recalled how he spent time with his brother before he went into cardiac arrest.

“But I remember on the material day that he went into cardiac arrest. I had spent the whole day with him. In fact, I am taking so much pride to know that I was the last person that Gibson had an actual conversation with. A conversation that has troubled my heart and mind… At no given point did Gibson ever tell me thank you – even for giving him water, but for this particular day on the 7th of September, I had three instances when Gibson told me thank you,” he added.

The late Vioja Mahakamani actor died following a long battle with diabetes and kidney failure. He underwent a successful kidney transplant at Mediheal Hospital in Eldoret in August 2022.

However, Gibson’s death started to deteriorate in September 2022 before he finally succumbed to cardiac arrest.

The late Vioja Mahakamani actor died on December 22, 2022, after being in a coma for three months in the intensive care unit at a hospital in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
