It is a major win in the war against drug trafficking after heroin worth Ksh11M was destroyed in Busia County.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the exercise marks another strong step by the government to stop the circulation of dangerous drugs in the country.
The DCI said in a statement on X on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, that “The Chief Magistrate of the Busia Law Court, Edna Nyaloti, today oversaw the destruction of heroin worth approximately Ksh11,808,000 at Alupe Sub-County Hospital Incinerator.”

Court-supervised destruction
The operation was carried out under a court order. It involved the burning of 3,936 grams of heroin, which had been seized from a convicted offender.
According to the DCI, the convict was fined Ksh50M or, in default, sentenced to 50 years in prison by the same court on Monday, March 18, 2025.

“Also destroyed were 337.2 kilograms of bhang, with an estimated street value of Ksh10,116,000,” the statement reads in parts.
The exercise was closely monitored by a multi-agency team comprising officers from the judiciary, National Police Service, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Public Health, Kenya Prisons Service, Kenya Forest Service (KFS), the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), and both County and Sub-County security teams.
The team confirmed that the drugs were destroyed at high temperatures to ensure total elimination before recording the entire process for court records.

The war on narcotics
According to the DCI, “The event signifies the government’s commitment to the war against cultivation, production, distribution, and sale of narcotic drugs across the country.”
The statement also said that the successful destruction of the drugs shows how security agencies are working together to protect communities from the harmful effects of drug abuse.
The police added that more crackdowns are underway across the country to dismantle drug networks and stop smugglers from targeting young people.

They further assured Kenyans that similar operations will continue in all counties to ensure the country remains free from drug trafficking and other illegal narcotic activities.
The Busia incident comes at a time when the government is stepping up its campaign against drugs, especially in border counties that have long been used as trafficking routes.
